About Peter Karch

virginia

Peter Karch is an author whose life experiences are as rich and diverse as the subjects he writes about. Born with an insatiable curiosity and a deep love for the natural world, Peter has spent decades exploring both the physical and moral terrains that shape human existence. His novel, P.E.T.S. The Best Kept Secret is a reflection of a lifetime of adventures, intellectual pursuits, and reflections on the complex relationship between humanity and the environment.

Peter’s journey began with a fascination for science and nature leading him to pursue various academic interests culminating in a career in biology and environmental studies. Most of his classes were purposely taught on-site to give students a feel for the biology they were part of. Sites ranged from the local foothills and streams of eastern Pennsylvania to the mountains, jungles, and rivers of Dominica and Costa Rica, including the rich biodiversity of the Osa Peninsula, as well as the Galapagos Islands and Quechuan villages in the jungles along the Rio Napo in Ecuador.

He and his family have traveled extensively through the US, most of Canada, Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, as well as many parts of Europe and the South Pacific. Besides the rolling Pennsylvania vineyard and winery, he and his wife Lillian developed after retiring,  his personal and professional outlook on life and living have been molded by hiking the Appalachian Trail and several extended sections of the Pacific Crest and John Muir Trails in the Sierra Nevada, bicycling solo and unsupported across the US twice, once at 61 and again at 71 years of age, sailing his wind board and daysailer on the Chesapeake Bay, and crewing the Soren Larsen, a Brigantine-rigged tall ship, while sailing the South Pacific between Vanuatu and New Caledonia. Peter has always found inspiration at the intersection of nature’s beauty, its demands, and the moral dilemmas these present to those who engage with it.

Throughout his travels, Peter observed the growing disconnect in humanity – a theme that is at the heart of P.E.T.S. The story, set in the latter years of the Twenty-First Century,  draws on Peter’s observations of environmental degradation, political corruption, and the ethical crises facing society. His writing explores a dystopian future where nature and civilization collide, thus urging readers to reflect on their own roles in shaping the world to come.

Peter’s intellectual pursuits are not limited to his love of nature. His academic background in biology and his wide-ranging travels have given him a unique perspective on the human condition. He brings these insights into his writing, creating characters whose personalities, actions, and situations originated as parts of his life, and are not only compelling but deeply reflective of the world’s most pressing moral questions. In P.E.T.S., readers will find a gripping story that challenges them to think critically about the consequences of inaction, the complexities of morality, and the responsibility we all share in safeguarding the planet.
